Hito Steyerl suggests in her essay Politics of Post Representation that we give up all privacy of information, visuals or text when we press the enter or share button. The lifespan of an image is determined by our engagement in sharing. Does the image develop its own aura therefore? One could look at an idea of “I am cited, therefore I am” hidden in the volume of shares. The longevity of an image could be equated with the pilgrimages to historically auratic imagery, found in churches and other locations of symbolic merit.
