Instructions for my behaviour.
Stand at a desk of typical height.
In front of you is a large stack of paper.
This pile of paper is a collection of current ideas, images, and past work.
A space to your left is for “selected” paper.
A space to your right is for “discarded” paper.
Each decision of selection or dismissal will impact on the day’s artistic output.
Select according to perceived quality, texture, colour or feature, however you feel inclined.
Begin to sort through the stack of paperwork with the top piece.
Your choice. Your impulsion. Do not be influenced by others.
This routine provides the groundwork & framework for the day’s artistic output.
Continue until the stack is split into two.
Place the “discarded” pile into the centre.
Place the “selected” pile on top of the stack.
You have now ranked your collection.
You have prepared, through routine, the conditions for creating your days’ work.
Every split second decision will influence the focus of your mind.
Your inspiration is accessible.
Repeat.
This behaviour of mine allows me to sharpen my focus on what it is I need to achieve that day. To create my visual narrative. My pile of influence is a little like a list of ingredients for a recipe. In the right order the outcome will be consumable, in the wrong order, unpalatable. These memories or accumulation of images are all favourites, but for any particular task their ranking will alter. The act of maintaining piles or stacks allows me to maintain order as I am chaotic in nature. If my surroundings are ordered then I have prepared conditions for unrestrained artwork.
