Can photography acts as a wondrous widespread solvent upon the linguistic barriers between peoples and their environment? Does photography constitute a universal language? Inuktitut is a language that is said to be agglutinative. New words can easily be synthesised from base terms. Terms for snow and ice often draw very subtle distinctions between a very high number of characteristics.
Photographic meaning is always a hybrid construction, the result of a relationship of iconic, visual and narrative formulae. Unlike classical representations of landscape, these works aim to avoid the easy orientation offered by foreground, vista, and horizon. Instead, the audience is encouraged to get lost and experience – on some level – that uncanny thrill of momentarily losing their way in the unfocused and experiencing their environs with renewed eyes.
