In the Romantic Tradition

Landscapes of fog, mist, and gloom seek to instil an overwhelming sense of emptiness in order to capture an experience of the infinite. These works exist by rejecting the aesthetic or beauty in a landscape and embracing the moment of sublimity through the contemplation of nature and a more meditative response to humanities spiritual self.

‘The connection between embodied responses to fear and sublime experiences provides evidence that emotional states might influence the perception of art even more fundamentally than previously thought’ Gombrich (1960), Eskine, K. J., Kacinik, N. A. and Prinz, J. J. (2012)
